Ugh. Another long day. Another day of rejections. I pulled the pins out of my hair, trying to keep the sadness from my face. I had been struggling to find a job in the modeling industry after quitting my job as a waitress to pursue my dream. It had seemed so big, so glamorous back then. Being a model, that is. I soon found out that my body type was not quite what most modeling agencies were looking for.

You see, I’m what you could call “curvy.” I’ve never had a problem with confidence; I’ve loved and embraced my curves and my body. However, mainstream modeling seemed to feel differently. I wish I could figure out why they kept hiring overtanned and underfed models to their company instead of girls with personality and spunk. Girls like me.

Don’t let it get to you, I kept telling myself. Your chance will come. Well, so far it hadn’t. I went to the cabinet in the kitchen and poured myself a drink, trying to think of what to do next as I sipped the strong liquid. Surely, someone will notice me. They can’t all be that shallow, right? My late mother – bless her heart, she died of a heart attack two years earlier – had always told me to pursue my dreams and never stop believing in myself. I wanted to. I was trying to. I wanted to make her proud. She had been my biggest fan and my inspiration for the longest time, and when she passed I made up my mind to start doing things I wanted instead of things other people wanted of me. Well… I was still working on it.

I sat down on the couch, trying to relax as I took sips of the dark rum I’d poured, letting the warming effect of the alcohol wash over me. Tomorrow will be different, I told myself. Tomorrow… I put down my glass. Dammit, it was always tomorrow, wasn’t it? I was always saying tomorrow this and tomorrow that, and it never happened. I was tired of waiting for success to happen upon me. They may not have liked me at the traditional companies, sure, but I’d heard of a new firm that was doing “alternative” shoots nearby, and I thought it worth it to pay them a visit. Tomorrow, I had said, forever putting it off day by day. Well, tomorrow was never going to get here unless I made it get here. I stood up and strode over to the full length mirror on the wall opposite me, looking myself up and down.

I was a little overweight, sure, but not terribly so. My body was my own and I loved it that way: the softness of the flesh, the natural womanly curves that graced my chest and hips. I was wearing a spotted dress that hugged me in all the right places. I may have been a plus size woman, but I could still pull off a dress with the best of them.
